Suvendu Adhikari to Vacate Nandigram Seat After Becoming West Bengal CM

A major political development has emerged from West Bengal as Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that he will vacate the Nandigram Assembly seat after winning from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

Adhikari had contested from both constituencies and secured victories in each. His win from Bhabanipur drew significant attention after he defeated Mamata Banerjee by a large margin.

After officially taking oath as an MLA in the West Bengal Assembly, Adhikari was seen removing his slippers and bowing at the steps of the Assembly before entering the House. The gesture was widely viewed as a mark of respect towards democracy and the legislative institution.

Speaking after the oath-taking ceremony, the Chief Minister said that as per Assembly tradition, MLAs are administered the oath in phases. He stated that 148 legislators would take oath, while the process would continue until the next day, followed by the election of the Speaker.

Adhikari also clarified that he took oath as an MLA from the Bhabanipur constituency, indicating that he would retain that seat and step down from Nandigram.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s recent appeal regarding austerity and public spending, Adhikari said that all measures taken by the Prime Minister were in the interest of the country and its people. He added that he had already instructed the Director General of Police to reduce the number of vehicles in his convoy and implemented the decision immediately.

The move is being seen as an attempt to project a simpler and more people-centric style of governance under the new administration in West Bengal.
