Priyanka Gandhi Questioned by BJP MP Over Absence From Jharkhand Student Protest
Political tensions escalated in Parliament as the NDA and Opposition staged separate protests over the Jharkhand student issue and other matters.
The Parliament complex witnessed a fresh political face-off on Tuesday as both the ruling NDA and Opposition MPs staged protests over different issues. Amid the demonstrations, BJP MP Mukesh Dalal directly questioned Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, asking why she had not visited the protesting students in Jharkhand.
The day began with NDA MPs marching through the Parliament complex before the start of proceedings. During the march, the ruling alliance targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing the Opposition of creating disruptions instead of allowing discussions on important issues.
Soon after, Opposition MPs staged their own protest, carrying posters and raising several demands. Some posters called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to apologise, while others raised concerns over alleged action against students and the suppression of young people's voices.
Samajwadi Party MP Akshay Yadav and other Opposition members also arrived carrying donation boxes and sugarcane-themed props as part of their protest. Security personnel formed a human chain to prevent the situation from escalating.
Amid the demonstrations, BJP MP Mukesh Dalal asked Priyanka Gandhi why she had not travelled to Jharkhand to meet the protesting students. The issue is linked to allegations surrounding irregularities in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
Responding to the broader controversy, Priyanka Gandhi said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had already met students in Jharkhand and that the party remained engaged with the issue.
Reacting to the NDA protest, she also said that she had never before seen ruling-party MPs staging such demonstrations and called for Amit Shah to make a statement.
The protests also affected proceedings inside the House. Amid continued Opposition demonstrations, the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 pm, with Question Hour unable to proceed fully.
Earlier in the morning, NDA MPs also attended their weekly meeting, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. The meeting focused on the strategy for the remaining days of the session and maintaining unity while ensuring the passage of key bills.
