Mamata Banerjee Forced to Cancel Key TMC Meeting as Majority of MLAs Remain Absent
Party cites attacks on Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee as reason behind lawmakers’ absence; protests to intensify across Bengal
A major political development unfolded in West Bengal on Sunday as an important meeting of newly elected Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators, scheduled to be chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was cancelled after a large number of MLAs failed to attend.
The meeting was set to take place at Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence in Kolkata. However, nearly three-fourths of the party’s legislators — around 60 out of 80 MLAs — could not participate, forcing the cancellation of the formal session.
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh described the situation as an “emergency,” attributing the absence of lawmakers to recent attacks on senior party leaders. According to the party, the developments followed an alleged attack on TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday and another reported attack on party MP Kalyan Banerjee on Sunday.
Ghosh said many MLAs were engaged in handling the political situation on the ground and participating in protests against the incidents. He further alleged that party workers had faced strict police action during demonstrations.
“This meeting had been scheduled in advance, but following the attacks on our leaders, many legislators remained involved in managing the situation at the grassroots level,” he said.
The absent MLAs reportedly informed the legislative party beforehand and requested that the meeting be postponed. Despite the low turnout, sources indicated that around 20 legislators had arrived at the venue by the scheduled time of 3 PM, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held informal discussions with those present.
However, the official meeting could not proceed. TMC leaders stated that the session would be rescheduled and that legislators would be informed of the new date in due course.
Meanwhile, the ruling party has announced plans to intensify political protests over the next 48 hours. TMC leaders have been instructed to organize protest rallies at the block level in rural areas and municipal wards in urban regions on June 1, condemning the alleged attacks on Abhishek Banerjee, Kalyan Banerjee, and party workers.
The party has also announced a one-day symbolic sit-in protest in Kolkata, scheduled to take place at Rani Rashmoni Road in Esplanade on Tuesday under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
According to the TMC, the demonstration will focus on alleged post-election violence and opposition to the eviction of hawkers through bulldozer actions in the state. Party leaders said further political programs would be announced from the protest stage on June 2.
