Assam Floods: Government Releases ₹75,000 Interim Relief as Death Toll Climbs to 85
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the first tranche of financial assistance for flood-hit families while reviewing relief and rehabilitation efforts in the worst-affected districts.
The Assam government on Monday began disbursing the first tranche of interim relief, providing financial assistance of up to ₹75,000 per affected household to families impacted by the recent floods across the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is touring the worst-hit districts, released the relief package from Dibrugarh as part of the state's ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
According to officials, families whose homes were severely damaged in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts will receive ₹15,000 per household as part of the first phase, along with other assistance, taking the total interim relief to ₹75,000 per household.
The flood situation has shown signs of improvement, with the number of affected people dropping to around 1.36 lakh across five districts. However, the death toll has risen to 85 after three more fatalities were reported from Sivasagar, one of the worst-affected districts.
Sivasagar remains the hardest-hit district with more than 55,000 people affected, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat. Authorities are currently operating 54 relief camps and distribution centres, sheltering nearly 13,800 people.
The floods have also caused extensive damage to agriculture, with over 15,400 hectares of farmland remaining submerged. Meanwhile, the Dhansiri River continues to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh in Golaghat district.
Chief Minister Sarma is expected to continue his visit to the affected areas to monitor relief operations and interact with flood-affected families as the state intensifies rehabilitation efforts.
