Vande Mataram to Echo from Red Fort for the First Time on Independence Day

India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the national celebrations from the historic Red Fort. One of the biggest highlights this year is the first-ever rendition of “Vande Mataram” from the Red Fort during the Independence Day celebrations. The occasion also marks 150 years of Vande Mataram, the National Song that played a historic role in India’s freedom struggle.

Around 5,000 special guests have been invited to witness the celebrations, while NCC cadets and MY Bharat volunteers will also play a prominent role.

The symbolism of Vande Mataram is particularly significant in 2026. Written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the song became closely associated with India’s freedom movement and inspired generations of freedom fighters. This year’s commemoration seeks to connect that historical legacy with contemporary India’s aspirations of becoming a developed nation.
