Supreme Court Cracks Down on Stray Dog Menace, Refuses to Relax Public Safety Rules

The Supreme Court has refused to modify its earlier directions on stray dogs, taking a tough stand amid rising dog bite incidents across the country. The Court ruled that stray dogs picked up from sensitive public places like hospitals, schools, bus stands, and railway stations cannot be released back to the same location after sterilisation or vaccination.

The apex court also permitted euthanasia for rabid and dangerously aggressive dogs, while directing states to improve anti-rabies vaccine availability and set up Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres. Stressing public safety, the Court said the “right to life with dignity” includes living without the fear of dog attacks.
