Rapido Declared Illegal in Jammu & Kashmir
Transport Department says bike taxi service was operating without a valid license under the J&K Motor Vehicle Aggregator Policy
The Jammu and Kashmir government has officially declared app-based taxi and bike service Rapido illegal in the Union Territory. Transport Commissioner Vishesh Paul Mahajan stated that the platform has been operating without obtaining a valid license required under the J&K Motor Vehicle Aggregator Policy.
According to officials, Rapido’s bike taxi services were running unlawfully in the region, prompting the administration to take action. Authorities said that all app-based transport aggregators must secure proper permissions and follow government regulations before offering services in Jammu and Kashmir.
The transport department also highlighted concerns related to passenger safety, accountability, insurance coverage, and driver verification. Officials noted that unauthorized transport services can create legal and safety complications in case of accidents or disputes.
The government’s move is being seen as part of a larger effort to regulate app-based mobility services and ensure strict compliance with transport laws in the Union Territory. Authorities have warned that action could be taken against any unlicensed operations continuing in the region.
Rapido has not yet released an official response to the development.
