President Droupadi Murmu Calls for Collective Effort to Build Viksit Bharat by 2047

New Delhi, August 14, 2026: President Droupadi Murmu, in her address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day, called upon citizens to work collectively towards transforming India into a developed nation by 2047, while upholding the country’s cultural heritage, constitutional values and spirit of patriotism.

Addressing the nation ahead of the 80th Independence Day, the President extended her greetings to citizens in India and abroad and described the Tricolour as a symbol of the country’s freedom and national pride. She paid tribute to freedom fighters and acknowledged the contributions of farmers, workers, scientists, doctors, teachers, sportspersons, entrepreneurs, social workers, sanitation workers, public representatives and members of the Armed Forces and police.

Highlighting the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, President Murmu said development must reach every section of society. She invoked the principle of Antyodaya and quoted the Vedic expression “Vayam Rashtre Jagriyam”, calling for continued dedication to national service.

The President also recalled the freedom movement and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and other national leaders. On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, she remembered those who lost their lives and were displaced during Partition. She also praised Sardar Patel’s historic role in integrating more than 550 princely states into independent India.

Focus on Inclusive Development

President Murmu highlighted what she described as significant progress in poverty reduction, financial inclusion, food security, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure and digital technology. She noted that millions of citizens have benefited from schemes including Jan Dhan Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, Kisan Samman Nidhi and other welfare initiatives.

She stressed that India’s development must remain rooted in its cultural identity and heritage. Referring to the country’s traditions in science, spirituality, art, culture and learning, she said India was moving forward by harmonising heritage with modern development.

The President also highlighted India’s digital transformation, noting the widespread adoption of digital payments and the expansion of modern infrastructure, including highways, railways, waterways and airways.

Women and Youth at the Centre of Nation-Building

A major part of the address focused on the growing role of women and youth in India’s development. President Murmu praised women’s achievements in education, sports, entrepreneurship, agriculture and the Armed Forces.

She highlighted the growth of Self-Help Groups, the achievement of the Lakhpati Didi target and increasing participation of women in economic and leadership roles. She also referred to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, describing it as an important step towards greater representation of women in democratic institutions.

Calling India’s young population its “most valuable asset,” the President praised young entrepreneurs, innovators, scientists and professionals for creating new opportunities and strengthening India’s global reputation. She also emphasised the importance of education, examination reforms, sports and the physical and mental wellbeing of young people.

Environment and Global Role

President Murmu urged citizens to protect natural resources for future generations. Drawing upon India’s traditional respect for nature, she highlighted initiatives such as Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) campaign.

She said India was also playing a growing role globally through its commitment to peace, cooperation, dialogue and the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. She noted India’s engagement with the Global South, international economic cooperation and efforts to promote a rules-based international order.

Tribute to Armed Forces and Fight Against Terrorism

The President paid tribute to the Armed Forces, recalling Kargil Vijay Diwas and Operation Sindoor. She praised the Armed Forces for demonstrating precision and determination in the fight against terrorism.

She also described the progress towards making India free from Naxalism as a significant achievement, noting that development and cultural activities are expanding in regions previously affected by Left-Wing Extremism.

Referring to Bastar, she highlighted events such as the Bastar Olympics and Bastar Pandum as examples of the region’s growing participation in sports and cultural activities.

Heritage, Spirituality and National Pride

The President also highlighted India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage, noting the inclusion of Maratha military forts and Sarnath in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Concluding her address, President Murmu emphasised that the true objective of building Viksit Bharat is the development and wellbeing of every Indian. Quoting poet Gurajada Apparao, she underlined the idea that a nation is not merely its land but its people.

She called upon citizens to dedicate themselves to the national mission of transforming Swatantra Bharat into Viksit Bharat, with collective participation, inclusive development and an all-encompassing spirit of patriotism.

The President concluded her address with the national greetings: “Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!”
