MILAN 2026 to Deepen Maritime Cooperation and Naval Interoperability
During the Harbour Phase, naval personnel and delegations will engage in a broad spectrum of activities aimed at strengthening mutual understanding and professional ties
The upcoming edition of MILAN 2026 is set to provide a comprehensive platform for professional, operational, and cultural exchanges among participating navies, reflecting the growing emphasis on collaborative maritime security.
During the Harbour Phase, naval personnel and delegations will engage in a broad spectrum of activities aimed at strengthening mutual understanding and professional ties. Key interactions will include Matter Expert Exchanges, bilateral meetings, a MILAN of Young Officers, and cross-deck visits between ships of participating navies. The programme will also feature pre-sail planning conferences and operational as well as technology demonstrations, allowing participants to share best practices and insights into evolving maritime capabilities.
Beyond formal engagements, the Harbour Phase will incorporate city visits, cultural tours, and sports fixtures, fostering camaraderie and interpersonal connections. A highlight of this phase will be the MILAN Cultural Evening, designed to celebrate diversity and encourage informal dialogue among naval communities.
The subsequent Sea Phase will shift focus to advanced operational exercises, underscoring the exercise’s core objective of enhancing maritime cooperation and interoperability. Participating navies will undertake coordinated maritime security operations, tactical manoeuvres, and structured communication drills at sea. These activities are intended to improve operational coordination, build confidence, and reinforce collective readiness in addressing shared maritime challenges.
Through MILAN 2026, the Indian Navy aims to reaffirm its enduring commitment to cooperative engagement, collective security, and the promotion of a rules-based maritime order. The exercise further highlights India’s role as a reliable partner and a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region, while contributing to broader regional stability and trust-building among friendly navies.
