Meta Apologises to Indian Government Over Content Moderation Lapses, Zuckerberg Expresses Regret

Meta has apologised to the Indian government over a series of content moderation lapses, including issues related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), deepfake content, and the removal of videos featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On Wednesday, Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan, along with other senior company executives, appeared before Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to address the government's concerns.

During the meeting, the government made it clear that digital platforms with millions of users in India cannot operate without accountability or adopt arbitrary content moderation practices. Officials stressed that social media companies must comply with Indian laws and ensure greater transparency in their operations.

According to government sources, Meta representatives informed the minister that CEO Mark Zuckerberg had personally expressed regret and apologised for the company's operational failures. The apology reportedly covered shortcomings in handling child sexual abuse material, the spread of deepfake content, and the removal of videos related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The government reiterated that platforms operating in India have a responsibility to protect users, act promptly against harmful content, and maintain fair and transparent moderation policies.

The meeting comes amid increased scrutiny of global technology companies as India pushes for stronger compliance with its digital regulations and greater accountability from social media platforms.
