Maharashtra Governor Refers ‘Freedom of Religion Bill 2026’ to President for Consideration

Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has referred the controversial Freedom of Religion Bill 2026 to President Droupadi Murmu for further consideration and approval.

Officials stated that the Governor chose not to grant assent to the bill, citing concerns that it relates to provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which fall within the Concurrent List. Subjects under this list impact both the central and state governments, necessitating closer constitutional scrutiny.

The bill was passed in March by the Maharashtra legislature with the backing of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, along with support from the opposition Shiv Sena (UBT). However, it faced strong opposition from parties including the Indian National Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), Samajwadi Party, and Communist Party of India (Marxist).

The move to escalate the bill to the President underscores its legal and political sensitivity, and a final decision is now awaited at the central level.
