Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026: Why Has No One Ever Climbed Mount Kailash?
Lower than Mount Everest but still untouched, Mount Kailash remains one of the world's most revered and mysterious mountains.
Mount Kailash, located in Tibet, is considered sacred by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and followers of the Bon tradition. For Hindus, it is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Despite being around 2,000 metres lower than Mount Everest, no confirmed successful ascent of its summit has ever been recorded.
The mountain's inaccessibility has led to countless stories and legends. Some claims suggest that time behaves differently around Kailash, while others say that people's hair and nails grow unusually fast or that visitors age rapidly. However, there is no scientific evidence to support these claims. Extreme altitude, low oxygen levels, harsh weather and psychological stress can cause unusual physical and mental experiences.
Kailash has attracted the attention of mountaineers over the years. Legendary climber Reinhold Messner is also linked to the mountain's history. Reports say he was offered permission to climb Kailash but chose not to, citing the mountain's deep spiritual significance.
Today, climbing Mount Kailash is prohibited. Instead, pilgrims undertake a parikrama (circumambulation) around the mountain as an act of devotion.
The region is also geographically significant. Four major rivers — the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra and Karnali — originate in the broader area around Kailash. Nearby, Mansarovar and Rakshas Tal offer another remarkable natural contrast, with one being a freshwater lake and the other saline.
For believers, Kailash is not a peak meant to be conquered. Its untouched summit represents the meeting point of faith, nature and human limitations — perhaps making it one of the world's most fascinating mountains.
