New Delhi, August 9, 2026: The southwest monsoon remains active across several parts of India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall in multiple regions today. Several states are likely to experience heavy to very heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in isolated areas.
In northwest India, rainfall is expected over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi-NCR. The hilly regions could face intense spells of rain, increasing the risk of waterlogging, landslides and flash floods in vulnerable areas.
Central and eastern India are also likely to remain wet, with rain and thunderstorms expected across several areas. Parts of Chhattisgarh are under a weather warning for today, while Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar and neighbouring regions may receive moderate to heavy showers.
In western India, Maharashtra and adjoining areas are likely to witness monsoon showers, with isolated heavy rainfall possible. The IMD has specifically issued a heavy-rain warning for Coastal Karnataka today.
The Northeast is also expected to see continued rainfall, with thunderstorms and lightning possible in several places.
Meanwhile, southern states will continue to experience monsoon activity, particularly along the west coast and parts of Karnataka and Kerala.
The IMD has advised people in areas facing heavy-rain warnings to remain alert, avoid flooded roads and keep track of local weather advisories. Overall, August 9 is expected to remain predominantly rainy across large parts of India, with isolated intense spells possible.
