Heavy Rain Triggers Waterlogging Across Kolkata, Disrupts Daily Life
Roads submerged in Kolkata, Salt Lake and Sector V; schools affected as civic authorities remain on high alert ahead of International Day of Yoga events
Kolkata, June 19: Heavy rainfall on Friday morning caused widespread waterlogging across several parts of Kolkata and adjoining districts in south Bengal, disrupting normal life and leading to major traffic congestion during peak office hours.
Several roads in central and north Kolkata, along with areas such as Salt Lake and Sector V, were submerged following the downpour. The accumulation of rainwater slowed vehicular movement and created traffic snarls across key thoroughfares, inconveniencing commuters.
Officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said reports of waterlogging had been received from multiple locations but maintained that the situation was not severe.
“Pumping stations and drainage systems have been activated, and civic personnel are on alert. Water is expected to recede once the rain subsides,” a KMC official said.
Authorities have heightened preparedness ahead of the International Day of Yoga celebrations on Sunday, which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Red Road. The KMC has opened a dedicated control room and remains on high alert to manage any rain-related emergencies.
The heavy rainfall also affected residents in low-lying areas, with water entering homes and educational institutions. Office-goers, students, and local residents faced considerable inconvenience as a result.
In Bally, located in the neighbouring Howrah district, a school teacher reported that yoga practice sessions scheduled ahead of International Day of Yoga celebrations were disrupted after rainwater flooded several classrooms.
“Classes had to be suspended as water entered multiple classrooms, making it impossible for students to attend lessons,” the teacher said.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Alipore recorded 43.6 mm of rainfall, Dum Dum received 58 mm, while Salt Lake recorded the highest rainfall at 80 mm between 8:30 am and 11:30 am.
Meteorologists have advised residents to remain cautious as further rainfall is likely in parts of south Bengal over the coming days.
