Election Commission Calls for Preparatory Work Ahead of Special Intensive Revision

The Election Commission of India has instructed Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) across multiple States and Union Territories to expedite preparatory activities for the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, scheduled to begin in April 2026.

In its communication, the Election Commission of India referenced its earlier Order No. 23/ERS/2025 dated 24 June 2025, through which the Commission formally directed that a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls be conducted nationwide. This was followed by a subsequent letter dated 5 July 2025, advising all CEOs — with the exception of Bihar — to commence pre-revision exercises. The Commission also noted that the SIR process had already been initiated in 12 States and Union Territories as announced in its letter dated 27 October 2025, and that this phase is currently underway.

With the next round of revisions expected to begin from April 2026, the Commission has now urged CEOs in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Ladakh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, NCT of Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana, and Uttarakhand to complete all necessary groundwork at the earliest.

The preparatory work typically includes activities such as data verification, logistics planning, staff training, and coordination with field-level election machinery, all aimed at ensuring the accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls ahead of the revision exercise.

The Commission emphasized that timely completion of these tasks is essential for the smooth rollout of the SIR process in 2026.
