Delhi government to begin fresh e-rickshaw registration process from May 15
New rules will allow registration only in the driver’s name and limit one e-rickshaw per person to improve regulation and passenger safety.
The Delhi government is set to launch a fresh registration process for e-rickshaws from May 15 as part of a major effort to regulate the growing number of battery-operated vehicles operating across the capital.
The move aims to bring e-rickshaws functioning in an unregulated manner under a proper legal and administrative framework. Officials believe the new system will not only improve passenger safety but also help authorities fix accountability in case of accidents or violations.
Under the revised rules, the biggest change is that an e-rickshaw can now be registered only in the name of the person who will drive it. Additionally, one individual will be allowed to register only one e-rickshaw in their name.
The new policy is expected to end the earlier practice where some individuals purchased multiple e-rickshaws and rented them out to financially weaker drivers on a daily rental or commission basis. In many such cases, drivers were also forced to bear the full maintenance costs of the vehicles despite not owning them.
Government officials say the updated registration system is designed to provide better financial security and ownership rights to drivers while ensuring stricter monitoring of e-rickshaw operations in the city.
The initiative is also being viewed as part of Delhi’s broader push toward improving urban transport management and strengthening its electric vehicle ecosystem.
Further details regarding documentation requirements and the registration process are expected to be released by the Delhi Transport Department soon.
