Dr R. Balasubramaniam and Dr Joram Aniya Appointed as Full-Time Members of NITI Aayog

The central government has appointed Dr R. Balasubramaniam and Dr Joram Aniya as full-time members of NITI Aayog, increasing the total number of full-time members to seven.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the appointments and congratulated both individuals, stating that their expertise and experience will play a key role in strengthening India’s policy framework and driving development across sectors.

These appointments follow the recent restructuring of NITI Aayog on April 24, 2026, when Ashok Kumar Lahiri was named Vice-Chairman. Several other full-time members were also appointed, including economists, scientists, and senior administrators.

Dr Joram Aniya’s appointment is considered particularly significant. Hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, she becomes one of the first women from the state to reach such a high-level policy-making position. An accomplished academic and associate professor, she has over 18 years of experience in teaching, research, and public policy. She is also known for her contributions to literature and culture, especially related to the Nyishi community.

Dr R. Balasubramaniam is a well-known public policy expert and development practitioner. He is the founder of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) and the Grassroots Research and Advocacy Movement (GRAAM). He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School and has extensive experience in governance and grassroots development.

The government expressed confidence that both appointees will bring fresh perspectives and contribute to effective policy-making at the national level.
