Amit Shah to Launch Vibrant Villages Programme–II in Assam

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah is set to launch the Vibrant Villages Programme–II (VVP–II) in Assam on Friday, 20 February 2026. The programme will be formally inaugurated at Nathanpur village in the Cachar district, marking a major step in the Government of India’s continued push for the development of border areas.

Vibrant Villages Programme–II aims to promote holistic and sustainable growth in border villages through a saturation-based and convergence-driven strategy. The initiative focuses on strengthening core infrastructure, improving access to essential services, and generating long-term livelihood opportunities. The broader objective is to create secure, resilient, and economically vibrant border communities, in line with the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

Beyond development, the programme also highlights the strategic role of border residents in safeguarding national interests. By improving living conditions and connectivity, the scheme seeks to empower local populations to actively support border security.

Villagers are expected to contribute through increased vigilance and community participation, helping authorities curb cross-border crimes and enhance internal security.

VVP–II has been approved as a Central Sector Scheme with a total financial outlay of ₹6,839 crore, covering the period up to the financial year 2028–29. The programme will be implemented across 15 States and 2 Union Territories, reflecting its nationwide significance in border area development. Officials note that the initiative builds upon earlier efforts to address developmental gaps in remote and strategically sensitive regions. The launch in Assam underscores the government’s emphasis on the North East as a critical component of national growth and security.

The scheme is expected to accelerate socio-economic progress in border regions while reinforcing their role in India’s long-term development and security framework.
