Food Safety Scare in Bengaluru: Expired Milk, Rotten Meat Found at Luxury Hotels
Major FDA Drive Across Star Hotels Uncovers Large Quantities of Spoiled and Expired Food
A major food safety inspection in Bengaluru has raised serious concerns about hygiene standards in some of the city’s high-end hotels. The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted inspections across several three-star and five-star properties following complaints and concerns over food safety.
The inspections uncovered expired food, spoiled meat, rotten vegetables and other hygiene violations. Officials seized and destroyed unsafe food items and issued notices to the hotels concerned. The drive involved 30 special teams, with 26 star hotels in and around Bengaluru inspected during one phase of the operation. Food samples were also collected for laboratory testing.
Among the most significant seizures, officials recovered 76 kg of meat, 200 kg of vegetables and 32 litres of expired milk from The Lalit Ashok (Annex South). At Radisson Blu Atria, authorities seized 105 kg of expired food, including 50 kg of chicken, 25 kg of meat, 23 kg of fish and 7 kg of vegetables.
Other establishments were also found with unsafe food. Officials seized 72 kg of meat and fish at Taj Yeshwantpur, 19 kg of meat at Four Seasons Bengaluru and 15 kg of meat at Shangri-La Bengaluru. Vivanta Bengaluru Whitefield had three kg of expired bakery products seized.
Authorities said the inspections are focusing not only on expiry dates but also on food storage, cold-chain maintenance, segregation of raw and cooked food, prevention of cross-contamination and kitchen hygiene.
The Karnataka government has indicated that the crackdown will continue, stressing that even luxury establishments will face action if they fail to comply with food safety regulations.
