‘Mysterious Door’ on Mars Sparks Alien Civilisation Debate, But Science Says Otherwise

A strange rock formation photographed by NASA’s Curiosity rover on Mars has sparked fresh speculation about the possibility of an ancient alien civilisation on the Red Planet. A dark, door-like shape visible in images taken around the end of July has gone viral on social media, with some users suggesting it could be evidence of an artificial structure.

However, there is currently no scientific evidence to support claims that the formation was created by an alien civilisation. NASA has not confirmed any such discovery.

Curiosity has been exploring Mars’ Gale Crater since 2012, studying the planet’s rocks and soil to determine whether Mars once had environmental conditions capable of supporting microbial life. The rover is currently examining the geological layers of Mount Sharp, which can provide clues about the planet’s ancient climate and the history of water on its surface.

The unusual formation became noticeable after multiple images from the area were combined. UFO researcher Scott C. Waring claimed that the structure could resemble a doorway measuring several feet in height and width. However, the actual dimensions cannot be reliably determined simply from the photograph.

Scientists believe the formation is more likely to be the result of natural geological processes, including cracks, fractures and erosion. Similar shapes can occur naturally in rocks on Earth as well.

This is not the first time a Mars image has triggered such speculation. In 2022, another Curiosity photograph showed what appeared to be a doorway in a rock. Scientists later explained that it was a much smaller natural opening, created by fractures in the rock.

The phenomenon is known as pareidolia—the tendency of the human brain to recognise familiar objects, such as faces or doors, in random shapes and patterns.

For now, the latest Martian “door” remains an intriguing geological formation, not evidence of an extraterrestrial civilisation.
