Kashmiri Diaspora Protests in Belgium, Condemns Alleged Rights Abuses in PoK

Members of the Kashmiri diaspora in Belgium staged a protest march from the European Parliament to the United Nations office in Brussels, condemning what they described as killings of civilians and human rights violations in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The protesters raised slogans against Pakistani security forces and urged the international community to take note of the situation in PoK. They alleged that civilians have faced restrictions on essential services and excessive use of force during ongoing demonstrations.

The protest comes amid similar demonstrations by Kashmiri diaspora groups in different countries. Last week, thousands of protesters reportedly gathered in Bologna, Italy, expressing solidarity with the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and calling for an end to security operations in the region.

According to the Jammu Kashmir Human Rights Observatory (JKHRO), 93 civilians were killed between June 5 and August 5 amid the escalating unrest in PoK. The figures are attributed to the organisation and could not be independently verified.

The developments have also drawn concern from some British parliamentarians. Labour MP Liam Byrne described reports of live fire against protesters as “deeply alarming”, while MP Adnan Hussain called for any allegations of excessive or unlawful force to be investigated independently and transparently.

The protesters have urged the international community to intervene and draw attention to the situation in PoK.
