Eid al-Adha 2026: Muslims Around the World Celebrate the Festival of Sacrifice

May 27, 2026: Muslims across the globe are celebrating Eid al-Adha, one of the most important religious festivals in Islam. Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, the occasion commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail, in obedience to Allah’s command.

According to Islamic belief, Allah intervened before the sacrifice could take place and sent a ram to be sacrificed instead, rewarding Ibrahim’s unwavering faith and devotion. The story symbolizes sacrifice, trust in God, and compassion for others.

Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Since the Islamic calendar is based on moon sightings, the festival date changes each year. In 2026, Eid al-Adha began on May 27 in several countries, including the United States.

The festival also marks the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims who are physically and financially able are expected to perform Hajj at least once in their lifetime.

Celebrations begin with special prayers at mosques, followed by gatherings with family and friends. Muslims wear new clothes, exchange greetings and gifts, and enjoy festive meals together.

One of the most important traditions of Eid al-Adha is Qurbani (Udhiya), the sacrifice of an animal such as a goat, sheep, or cow. The meat is divided among family, relatives, and those in need, highlighting the importance of charity and helping the less fortunate.

Eid al-Adha is one of the two major Islamic festivals, alongside Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. Muslims commonly greet one another by saying “Eid Mubarak” or “Eid al-Adha Mubarak,” meaning “Blessed Eid.”
