Is Bangladesh Becoming ‘Another Pakistan’ on India’s Eastern Front? Dhaka-Islamabad Ties Raise Alarm
Growing military, diplomatic and economic engagement between Bangladesh and Pakistan is drawing attention in New Delhi
Bangladesh’s growing engagement with Pakistan has sparked debate in India over the country’s changing strategic direction. Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, recently described Bangladesh as the “new Pakistan” on India’s eastern front and raised concerns over the alleged growing influence of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
The remarks come after a significant shift in Bangladesh-Pakistan relations following Sheikh Hasina’s ouster in August 2024. Under the subsequent political leadership, Dhaka has expanded diplomatic, military and economic engagement with Islamabad.
Several Pakistani military officials have visited Bangladesh in recent months, while Bangladeshi military delegations have also travelled to Pakistan. These exchanges have fuelled speculation about closer defence and intelligence cooperation. Pakistan has rejected allegations of ISI interference in Bangladesh.
Economic and transport ties have also improved. Direct shipping between Karachi and Chittagong has resumed, while direct air connectivity has increased. The two countries have also moved towards easier travel arrangements for diplomats and military personnel.
For India, the developments are significant because Bangladesh shares a nearly 4,000-km border with India and plays a crucial role in Northeast connectivity, regional trade and security.
Experts have also pointed to concerns over the reported rise of Islamist influence in Bangladesh’s political and military landscape. However, analysts caution that describing Bangladesh as “another Pakistan” may oversimplify a complex situation.
India is therefore likely to face the challenge of maintaining a pragmatic relationship with Dhaka while addressing its security concerns.
Despite the growing Bangladesh-Pakistan proximity, geography, trade and economic interests continue to bind India and Bangladesh closely. Whether Dhaka is truly moving towards a Pakistan-like model remains uncertain, but its changing strategic orientation is emerging as an important concern for New Delhi.
