Direct Tax Collection Surges 23%, Boosting Government Revenue

India’s direct tax collection has recorded strong growth in the financial year 2026–27, signalling a significant boost to the government’s revenue position.

According to data released by the central government, gross direct tax collection up to August 10, 2026, stood at ₹9.55 lakh crore, registering a 19.75% year-on-year increase. During the corresponding period of the previous financial year, gross direct tax collection was ₹7.97 lakh crore.

After accounting for refunds, net direct tax collection rose 23.09% to ₹8.11 lakh crore. The sharp rise highlights stronger tax revenues and provides a positive indication for the government's fiscal position.

Corporate tax collections have also shown notable improvement. The government collected around ₹3.80 lakh crore in corporate tax during the period up to August 10, compared with ₹3.32 lakh crore in the same period last year. This represents an annual growth of approximately 14.45%.

The rise in corporate tax receipts is being viewed as an indication of improved earnings and profitability among companies. Stronger tax compliance, economic activity and corporate performance could also be contributing to the overall increase in direct tax revenues.

The latest figures are significant for the government as higher direct tax collections can strengthen its revenue base and provide greater fiscal room for expenditure on infrastructure, welfare programmes and other development initiatives.
