Resilient Ghana Hold England to Scoreless Draw in Group L Battle
Thomas Tuchel's side dominated possession and created numerous chances, but resilient Ghana frustrated the Three Lions to earn a valuable point in Group L.
England's hopes of securing an early place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage suffered a setback after they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Ghana in their Group L clash at Gillette Stadium near Boston on Tuesday.
After an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia in their tournament opener, England entered the match as clear favourites. However, despite controlling possession and registering 19 shots compared to Ghana's two, the Three Lions failed to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Ghanaian defence.
The best opportunity for England came late in the match when Nico O'Reilly's header struck the crossbar, while captain Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham were unable to convert several promising chances. Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare delivered a standout performance, making crucial saves to deny England throughout the contest.
Ghana, who began their World Cup campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Tunisia, remained compact and organised, limiting England's attacking threat. Antoine Semenyo came closest for the African side, but he too was unable to capitalize on a rare opportunity.
England manager Thomas Tuchel attempted to change the game's momentum with second-half substitutions, introducing Marcus Rashford, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers. However, Ghana's defensive resilience ensured the score remained level until the final whistle.
The result leaves England with work still to do in their bid to finish top of Group L and secure qualification for the Round of 32. Meanwhile, Ghana will take confidence from a hard-earned point against one of the tournament favourites.
Watched by nearly 64,000 fans, the encounter highlighted Ghana's determination and defensive discipline while raising questions about England's ability to convert dominance into goals as the tournament progresses.
