Monterrey, Mexico | June 30, 2026 Morocco produced one of the most dramatic victories of the FIFA World Cup 2026, defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 1-1 draw following extra time to secure a place in the Round of 16.
The Netherlands looked set to progress after Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the second half, finishing from close range after an assist from Crysencio Summerville. However, Morocco refused to surrender, with Issa Diop heading home a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser from Chemsdine Talbi's cross to force extra time.
Morocco continued to threaten during the additional 30 minutes, but Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made several crucial saves, including a superb stop to deny Soufiane Rahimi. With neither side able to find a winner, the contest was decided by penalties.
Although Neil El Aynaoui missed Morocco's opening spot-kick, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero by saving Crysencio Summerville's penalty. Ismael Saibari then confidently converted the decisive kick to seal a memorable 3-2 shootout victory for the Atlas Lions.
The win sends Morocco into the Round of 16, where they will face Canada, while the Netherlands bow out despite a spirited performance led by captain Virgil van Dijk.
