West Bengal Launches Statewide Madrasa Survey, Eight Key Questions to Be Asked
District administrations have been directed to submit reports by July 5 as the government seeks updated data on madrasa infrastructure, registration, staff, and legal compliance.
Kolkata, June 7, 2026: The West Bengal government, under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has ordered a statewide survey of madrasas to gather detailed information regarding their functioning, infrastructure, and legal status. All district magistrates have been instructed to submit comprehensive reports by July 5, 2026.
According to officials, the survey aims to create an updated database of madrasa institutions and determine whether they are operating in accordance with existing rules and possess the necessary legal documents.
The move comes nearly a month after the BJP government came to power in West Bengal, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the state.
As per a notification issued on June 5 by the Department of Minority Affairs and Madrasa Education, district authorities have been directed to collect details on eight major aspects of madrasas. These include the institution’s location, year of establishment, registration details, legal documentation, student enrollment numbers, teaching and non-teaching staff strength, type of institution, and courses being offered.
Officials said the information gathered would help the government assess educational facilities, improve institutional management, and plan future development initiatives within the madrasa education sector.
A senior state secretariat official reportedly stated that the exercise is administrative in nature and intended to provide a complete picture of madrasa education across West Bengal. Verified data will reportedly help shape future policies, student welfare measures, and maintenance-related decisions.
Authorities have also indicated that any irregularities or unauthorized activities identified during the review process may be investigated separately. However, the government clarified that there is currently no proposal to alter the existing educational structure or curriculum followed in madrasas.
Recently, the BJP-led state government also made the singing of “Vande Mataram” mandatory during morning prayers in madrasas and other educational institutions across the state.
