West Bengal Election Results 2026 LIVE: Tight Battle Between Trinamool and BJP in Early Leads

The counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 has begun, setting the stage for a closely fought political battle between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Early trends indicate a neck-and-neck contest, with both parties exchanging leads across constituencies.

In the initial rounds, the BJP surged ahead in several seats, while the Trinamool followed closely behind. The Congress has also made a modest comeback, leading in a couple of constituencies—an improvement compared to its zero tally in the 2021 elections.

One of the most closely watched battles is in Bhabanipur, where Mamata Banerjee is trailing in early trends against BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. This constituency has emerged as a symbolic and strategic battleground in this election.

The election, held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, saw intense campaigning, ideological clashes, and high voter turnout. This is also the first election after a major revision of voter rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which led to the deletion of lakhs of names—sparking political controversy.

With 294 total seats in the Assembly, the magic number to form the government is 148. Exit polls had failed to predict a clear winner, making the counting process even more crucial.

Security has been tightened across counting centres with three-tier arrangements, and officials have assured transparency in the process. Postal ballots were counted first, followed by Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) data.

As the day progresses, the political future of West Bengal hangs in the balance—whether the Trinamool secures a fourth consecutive term or the BJP scripts history in the state remains to be seen.
