TMC Faces Major Setback as MP Saayoni Ghosh Joins Rebel Camp, Backs NDA

The political crisis within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) appears to be deepening as party MP and actress-politician Saayoni Ghosh has reportedly joined a group of rebel lawmakers seeking to distance themselves from the party leadership. The development is being viewed as a significant setback for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

According to reports, 20 TMC Members of Parliament have written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla requesting separate seating arrangements in Parliament while also announcing support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Saayoni Ghosh, who currently represents the Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency, is said to be among the signatories to the letter.

Saayoni Ghosh is a well-known Bengali actress, singer, and politician who joined the TMC ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. She gained political prominence during the campaign period and became one of the party’s prominent youth faces. Her campaign song, “Mere Dil Mein Hai Kaaba Aur Aankhon Mein Madina,” had sparked major political controversy, with opposition leaders accusing the TMC of minority appeasement.

The reported shift in political alignment has raised eyebrows, especially given Saayoni’s previous criticism of the BJP and its leaders. During an election rally, she had sharply attacked rival politicians and projected herself as firmly aligned with the TMC’s ideology.

Saayoni entered active politics in 2021 when Mamata Banerjee fielded her from the Asansol South Assembly constituency, though she failed to secure victory. Despite the loss, she quickly rose within the party ranks and later became president of the TMC Youth Wing in 2023.

Her political journey also drew national attention in 2021 when she was arrested in Tripura during local body elections after allegedly raising slogans near a BJP gathering. She later emerged as one of the party’s outspoken young leaders.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Saayoni won from Jadavpur, cementing her position in Bengal politics. However, the latest political developments indicate growing unrest within the TMC after the party’s electoral setback in West Bengal.

Reports suggest that alongside Saayoni Ghosh, several other TMC MPs have joined the rebel group, including prominent leaders such as Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Satabdi Roy, Prasun Banerjee, June Maliah, and others. The rebels have reportedly proposed replacing Abhishek Banerjee with Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar as leader of the TMC parliamentary party.

The internal divisions come at a crucial time for the TMC, raising serious questions over Mamata Banerjee’s ability to maintain unity within the party following recent political turbulence in the state.
