Tej Pratap Yadav Sparks Controversy with Remarks on Bihar’s Liquor Ban at Patna Press Meet

New Delhi | April 9, 2026: Tej Pratap Yadav, a senior leader of the Janata Dal (Secular), stirred controversy during a press conference in Patna after making sharp remarks on the effectiveness of Bihar’s liquor prohibition policy.

Addressing the media, Yadav asserted that the liquor ban in Bihar has “completely failed,” alleging that alcohol remains easily accessible across the state. He claimed that despite strict laws, liquor is still being sold openly in several areas, raising serious questions about enforcement.

In a further controversial observation, Yadav referred to changing social behavior in urban areas, stating that scenes in parts of the capital reflect a shift in public norms. His comments have since triggered debate across political and social circles.

Bihar has been under a complete liquor prohibition policy since 2016, introduced by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, aimed at curbing alcohol consumption and its social impact. However, opposition leaders have repeatedly criticized its implementation, citing alleged loopholes and illegal trade.

Yadav’s remarks are expected to intensify the ongoing political discourse around the effectiveness and future of the prohibition law in the state.
