CPI(M) Questions Congress Over Kerala Poll Remarks, Seeks Clarity Ahead of INDIA Bloc Meet
CPI(M) writes to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, criticises allegations made during Kerala Assembly polls and says such remarks weaken opposition unity against the BJP.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has raised serious concerns with the Indian National Congress over allegations made during the Kerala Assembly elections, questioning whether such remarks undermine the unity of the opposition INDIA bloc.
In a letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, CPI(M) General Secretary M. A. Baby said the party was informed about the INDIA bloc meeting scheduled for June 8, 2026, and felt compelled to raise issues stemming from the recent Kerala election campaign.
The CPI(M) alleged that Congress leaders systematically campaigned on claims that the party had struck a political understanding with the BJP in Kerala. According to the letter, senior Congress leaders — including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Kharge — repeatedly accused CPI(M) and former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of having an alleged “deal” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The party claimed these were not isolated election remarks but a central theme of the Congress campaign. CPI(M) also objected to repeated questions raised by Congress leaders regarding why Vijayan had not been interrogated or arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Calling the allegations damaging, CPI(M) said such claims strike at the very foundation of the INDIA bloc, which was formed to unite opposition parties against the BJP despite ideological differences and electoral rivalries in various states.
Defending its anti-BJP credentials, CPI(M) pointed out that many of its cadres had been killed in political clashes involving the RSS-BJP in Kerala. The party also highlighted that Kerala witnessed no communal riots during the last ten years of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule, describing it as proof of its commitment to secularism and communal harmony.
The letter further criticised Rahul Gandhi for allegedly demanding ED action against Vijayan, questioning whether such remarks aligned with the opposition’s anti-BJP stance or indirectly encouraged punitive action by the Modi government against a fellow opposition leader.
While seeking clarification from the Congress leadership, CPI(M) reaffirmed that it would continue cooperating with INDIA bloc partners in Parliament to jointly oppose what it described as the Modi government’s “authoritarian, communal, and anti-people policies.”
