Bhopal’s Barkatullah University Renaming Proposal Sparks Political Row in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal: A political controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after the Executive Council (EC) of Barkatullah University in Bhopal approved a proposal to rename the institution as ‘Vagdevi Bhojpal University’.

University Registrar Dr. S.B. Singh said the proposal was unanimously passed during an EC meeting and will now be sent to the state government for final approval and legal implementation.

According to university officials, the renaming aims to honor the region’s historical and cultural heritage, especially the intellectual legacy of King Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty. Authorities said Bhopal was historically known as ‘Bhojpal’, and the proposed name combines it with ‘Vagdevi’, the goddess of knowledge.

Established in 1970 as Bhopal University, the institution was renamed Barkatullah University in 1988 in honor of freedom fighter Maulana Mohammad Barkatullah Bhopali, a key figure in India’s independence movement and the historic Ghadar Movement.

However, the proposal has triggered criticism. Executive Council member Dr. Tahira Abbasi reportedly opposed the move, arguing that the university’s current name represents the legacy of a respected freedom fighter and should not be replaced. She suggested creating a new institution in King Bhoj’s name instead.

The issue has also ignited political debate. BJP leaders defended the proposal as a step toward honoring Madhya Pradesh’s cultural identity, while Congress accused the government of using “name-change politics” to divert attention from academic and administrative challenges in the university.

This is not the first renaming exercise in the state, with places like Habibganj Railway Station and Hoshangabad renamed in recent years.
