Southwest Monsoon Likely to Arrive in Kerala, IMD Issues Rain Alerts

Thiruvananthapuram: The southwest monsoon is expected to make its onset over Kerala on Thursday, marking the beginning of India's crucial rainy season. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather conditions have become highly favorable for the monsoon's advance into the state.

The monsoon was initially forecast to reach Kerala around May 26. However, changes in weather patterns over the Arabian Sea slowed its progress, resulting in a brief delay. Meteorologists now indicate that the system is poised to move further inland, bringing widespread rainfall across the region.

The IMD has warned that several parts of Kerala could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five to seven days following the monsoon's arrival. In view of the expected weather conditions, an Orange Alert has been issued for the districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, signaling the possibility of intense rainfall and localized disruptions.

Meanwhile, Yellow Alerts have been declared in the remaining 11 districts of the state. Residents have been advised to remain cautious as thunderstorms, lightning activity, and strong winds with speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph are likely in many areas.

The arrival of the southwest monsoon is closely watched as it plays a vital role in India's agriculture, water resources, and overall economy. Authorities are monitoring the situation and have urged people in vulnerable areas to follow official advisories and take necessary precautions against potential weather-related risks.

The onset over Kerala traditionally marks the official start of the monsoon season across the Indian subcontinent.
