Madhya Pradesh’s ‘VVIP Mango’: Guards Protect Every Branch of Rare Noorjahan Trees
In a tribal region of Alirajpur, a farmer deploys armed guards to protect one of the world’s largest and most expensive mango varieties
In Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district, a rare mango variety is receiving security usually reserved for VIPs. At a farm in Katthiwada, a farmer has deployed nearly 9 to 11 guards solely to protect just nine trees of the famous Noorjahan mango.
Known for its extraordinary size, rarity, and premium taste, the Noorjahan mango has become a major attraction not only in India but also abroad. Priced between ₹1,500 and ₹3,000 per fruit, the mangoes are often sold out even before the season begins through advance bookings.
The rare variety is cultivated at Shiv Mango Farm in Juna Katthiwada village. Farmer Bharatraj Singh Jadhav says the Noorjahan mango originally traces its roots to the Afghan region. His late father reportedly brought its saplings from Gujarat during the 1960s.
Today, the farm houses nine mature Noorjahan trees aged between 20 and 25 years, along with 11 newly developed plants prepared using grafting techniques. According to the farmer, nearby districts have attempted cultivation, but none have matched the farm’s giant fruit size and quality.
The Noorjahan mango is considered one of the largest mangoes in the world, with a single fruit weighing anywhere between 2 to 5 kilograms — enough for an entire family. Its unique aroma, sweetness, and striking appearance make it highly sought after in domestic and international markets.
Demand for Noorjahan mangoes is rising in Gulf countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait, while Indian communities in the US, Canada, and the UK are also showing growing interest. However, due to limited production, exports remain restricted, making it a luxury mango in global markets.
The farm is also known for cultivating dozens of other premium mango varieties, turning it into what locals describe as a “museum of mangoes.”
