Jabalpur Cruise Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to 9 as Search Continues
A tourist cruise capsizes in Bargi Dam amid a sudden storm; survivors allege serious safety lapses and delayed distribution of life jackets
A devastating boat accident in Jabalpur has claimed at least nine lives after a tourist cruise overturned in the Bargi Dam on May 1, 2026. Rescue teams are still searching for four missing passengers, including three children, as authorities intensify efforts at the accident site.
The tragedy occurred when a cruise operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department encountered a sudden storm while returning to shore. The vessel, carrying around 31 people including crew members, lost stability amid strong winds and rising waves, eventually capsizing in deep waters of the Narmada River reservoir.
Rescue operations, involving teams from the National Disaster Response Force, local police, and the Indian Army, faced major challenges due to poor weather, darkness, and the vessel being lodged 20–25 feet underwater. While 28 people were rescued, divers continue combing the area for those still missing.
Heartbreaking scenes emerged during recovery efforts, including the discovery of a mother who died while clutching her young son in a final attempt to protect him. Survivors have accused the crew of negligence, claiming life jackets were not distributed in time and warnings to return to shore were ignored.
In response, Mohan Yadav has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. Several staff members linked to the cruise operation have been suspended or dismissed for alleged negligence. The government has also announced compensation for victims and rewards for rescuers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences and announced financial assistance for the affected families.
