Delhi University Protest Incident: NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a reported incident involving the alleged physical and sexual assault of a woman journalist during a students’ protest at the North Campus of Delhi University.

According to media reports, the journalist was on assignment covering protests against UGC regulations on 13 February 2026 when she was allegedly attacked by a group of protesters. It has been reported that after identifying her caste, some individuals began assaulting her, with claims of threats and severe misconduct. Taking note of the matter, the NHRC observed that, if the allegations are true, the incident raises serious concerns regarding violations of the victim’s human rights. The Commission has issued a notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

As per the reports, the journalist alleged that she was specifically targeted because of her caste. She was reportedly assisted by members of the faculty and women police personnel, enabling her to escape the situation.

The incident has sparked concern over the safety of media professionals and the need for accountability in public demonstrations.
