Delhi Couple Engaged Inside Mahakal Temple, Security Agency Fined ₹50,000 After Video Goes Viral
Temple committee orders Instagram video deletion and takes strict action over alleged violation of Mahakaleshwar Temple rules
A Delhi-based couple has sparked controversy after performing their engagement ceremony inside the famous Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, and uploading the video on social media. The incident prompted swift action from the temple administration, which imposed a ₹50,000 fine on the security agency responsible for monitoring temple protocols.
According to temple officials, the incident took place on May 26, when the couple entered the temple premises through the VIP protocol system after obtaining the required entry receipt. Once inside, the pair allegedly exchanged engagement rings at the Ganesh Mandapam, an area within the temple complex.
The controversy escalated after the couple uploaded a video of the ceremony on Instagram. The post reportedly carried the caption: “Jab Mahakal raazi to kya karega kazi” (“When Mahakal approves, what can anyone else do?”). The video quickly gained attention on social media, prompting intervention by the temple committee.
Temple authorities stated that conducting personal ceremonies such as engagements inside the temple premises violates established regulations. Following the viral spread of the video, officials ordered its removal from Instagram and launched an internal inquiry.
Mahakaleshwar Temple Assistant Administrator Ashish Phulwadiya said that a ₹50,000 penalty had been imposed on the security agency for negligence. Additionally, the attendant seen in the video has been permanently barred from entering all special access gates of the temple.
Authorities also issued warnings to the concerned protocol staff and priest, while show-cause notices are being prepared for temple employees linked to the incident.
Officials pointed out that this is not the first instance of rule violations at the Mahakal Temple. Despite restrictions on carrying mobile phones inside the premises, the individuals involved allegedly managed to bring a phone into the temple and record the video.
The temple committee has stated that regulations will be further tightened to prevent similar incidents in the future and to maintain the sanctity of the revered shrine.
