After more than five weeks of escalating hostilities, a significant de-escalation was announced on Tuesday morning as U.S. President Donald Trump declared a halt to military strikes for a period of two weeks, describing it as a bilateral ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
According to Trump, the ceasefire is conditional upon Iran ensuring the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route. Shortly after the announcement, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) confirmed its agreement to the ceasefire, though it characterized the development as a strategic victory for Tehran.
A key highlight of Trump’s statement was the acknowledgment of a 10-point proposal submitted by Iran, which Washington has agreed to consider as a basis for future negotiations. Posting on his platform Truth Social, Trump noted that the proposal offers a “workable foundation” to initiate dialogue.
Iran’s 10-point plan includes major demands such as guarantees against future U.S. attacks, continued Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, recognition of its uranium enrichment rights, and the lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions. Additionally, Tehran has called for the termination of United Nations Security Council and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolutions against it, compensation for damages, withdrawal of U.S. forces from the region, and an end to conflicts involving allied groups such as Hezbollah.
The ceasefire marks a critical pause in tensions, with global attention now focused on whether diplomatic talks can translate into a lasting resolution.
