Pakistan Launches Manhunt in PoK After Deadly Crackdown on Protesters

Tensions continue to escalate in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as authorities have launched a large-scale manhunt for four protesters allegedly linked to the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), following a violent crackdown that reportedly left dozens dead.

According to reports, the PoK administration has announced a reward of ₹1 crore for information leading to the arrest of key protest leaders associated with JAAC, a group campaigning for economic reforms in the region. Sedition proceedings have also reportedly been initiated against two JAAC leaders as Islamabad intensifies its response to mounting protests.

The unrest erupted after demonstrations spread across several parts of PoK, particularly in the Mirpur division, with protesters from Bhimber, Kotli, and surrounding districts marching toward Muzaffarabad. Hundreds gathered near Quaid-i-Azam Stadium in Mirpur before the protest movement intensified.

The crackdown reportedly followed violence linked to the Barmang Bridge shooting, triggering widespread anger across the region. While official figures reportedly place the death toll at 11, intelligence-based claims allege significantly higher casualties, including the deaths of 19 children and seven pregnant women during the security operation.

Reports further claim that nearly 14,000 Pakistani troops were deployed to contain the protests, with authorities imposing communication restrictions, including internet and mobile service suspensions. Protesters and local groups have accused security forces of using live ammunition against unarmed civilians and mourners.

The crisis has sparked international concern. Days earlier, more than 50 British Members of Parliament reportedly urged the UK government to intervene, raising alarm over alleged human rights violations and what they described as harsh actions against protesters in the region.

The protests and strike have severely disrupted daily life in PoK, with banks, medical facilities, and businesses remaining shut in multiple areas as a region-wide shutdown continued.

India also reacted sharply to the developments. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the reported violence and accused Pakistan of attempting to divert attention through misinformation.

“There are reports of severe police brutality in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in which several people have been killed and many injured. We hope the international community will hold Pakistan accountable for its misdeeds and abuses,” Jaiswal said.

As unrest persists across Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad, and other parts of PoK, the situation remains tense, with fears of further escalation amid an ongoing security crackdown and public protests demanding reforms and accountability.
