Afghanistan Claims Heavy Losses for Pakistani Army in Overnight Operation
Kabul says 109 Pakistani soldiers killed and several army bases destroyed; Islamabad yet to respond
Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have escalated after Afghanistan’s Ministry of National Defence claimed a major military operation against Pakistani forces.
According to a spokesperson for the Afghan defence ministry, Afghan fighters carried out a cross-border operation overnight, killing 109 Pakistani soldiers and injuring more than 150 others. The spokesperson also alleged that several Pakistani army bases were destroyed during the operation. The statement described the action as a response to what Kabul called repeated provocations and security threats along the volatile border region. However, officials from Pakistan have not yet issued an official confirmation or response regarding the claims.
The Afghanistan–Pakistan border has long remained a sensitive and disputed area, often witnessing clashes between security forces and militant groups. Such claims of large-scale casualties, however, are rare and difficult to independently verify.
Security analysts warn that if confirmed, the incident could significantly heighten tensions between the two neighbouring countries and raise concerns about broader instability in the region.
For now, international observers are closely monitoring the situation as both sides assess the developments and the possibility of further escalation remains uncertain.
